The past number of years have been tough on everyone, but young people, particularly children and adolescents suffered the most. While some of you went on to college or university unscathed, there are many who still have lingering anxiety/trauma from their experiences during the pandemic. On top of this, other factors, such as the effects of social media, pressure to succeed academically, increasing rates of diagnoses of mental health disorders such as ADHD, depression, anxiety, OCD, make attending to schoolwork that much more difficult. Additionally, being a Jewish student has its unique challenges. Some students have to navigate the reality of anti-semitism and anti-Israel incidents which often require additional and unique support.
The Hillel Counselling and Wellness Program will offer up to six counselling sessions to each eligible student, based on assessment and treatment goals. Yael Greenwood, the Hillel therapist, works from a primarily person-centred approach and collaborates with clients to create treatment plans unique to them and their needs, drawing from the types of theoretical approaches mentioned above.
Yael has experience working with students struggling with anxiety (including health anxiety, social anxiety, school anxiety, generalized anxiety), mild obsessive-compulsive disorder, anger management, low mood, low motivation, fear of the future, career guidance, life transitions, family conflict, relationship challenges, grief and loss, ADHD, learning disabilities, challenges with ‘fitting in’, and racial discrimination. If you are struggling with another issue not on this list feel free to reach out and Yael will help refer you to the appropriate support services.
Because counselling will be limited in the number of sessions, Yael cannot offer counselling to students with major mental health diagnoses or symptoms, students looking for treatment for eating disorders or addictions, or those who present with risk factors to student safety, or with students with whom there is a clear conflict of interest/ possibility of a dual relationship. However, in these cases, Yael will take a case management role, and help students to get connected to the appropriate resources. No student will ever be left on their own to access the help that they need.
All students in the Hillel community at the nine university campuses that Hillel Ontario serves, as well the college campuses affiliated with these universities (for example Seneca in Toronto, Fanshawe in London etc…) are eligible to access counselling through this program.
As the largest Jewish student organization in the world, Hillel enriches the lives of Jewish students so that they may enrich the Jewish people, and the world.
