First Semester Retrospective

Written by Judith Dworkin, Director of McMaster Hillel

This semester has been action packed and amazing!  Where does one start when summarizing an awesome semester?  We kicked off the new year with a Welcome Back BBQ, Shabbat dinner and Clubs Fest that saw record numbers from last year.  We met over 50 first year students who visited us at Clubs Day and chatted with us about where they were from and how they would like to get involved in Hillel.

From Bagel Lunch each week to an over capacity Challaween (Challah bake), McMaster Hillel engaged new and previous students at every possible moment.   Holocaust Education Week featured a Yad Vashem exhibit for the first time as well as a survivor speaker who came to campus to speak to her experience.  She was so moving and brave and the crowd of over 60 listened with pin drop silence.

Israeli Wine and Cheese…..Snakes and Latkes…..the list goes on with high quality programming that students and staff put together for the wider community.   Ongoing was also our involvement in interfaith issues with the university administration and working with the student union on amazing initiatives.   Finally, students engaged with our new Israel Fellow, Ayinadis Darbow, learning from her and working with her on Israel programs throughout the semester.

We are already excited for second semester where will kick off On One Foot, our annual fundraising campaign and other amazing programming! Stay tuned!
