Synagogues and Religious Life

Temple Anshe Sholom (Reform)

A 2 minute drive from campus, or a 12 minute walk. Friday night services begin with an Oneg Shabbat at 6:15, followed by Kabbalat Shabbat at 7:00 pm. Saturday and weekday times can be found on the website.

Adas Israel (Orthodox)
Address: 125 Cline Ave S. (map)

A ten minute walk from campus, or a 5 minute drive. Shabbat services start at 9 am on Saturday, and daily times can be found on their website.

Beth Jacob Synagogue (Conservative)
Address: 375 Aberdeen Ave (map)

About 8 minutes by car, or 40 minutes by foot from McMaster. Shabbat services start at 9:15 am on Saturday, and daily times can be found on their website.

Chabad of Hamilton

Over the last 20 years, Chabad of Hamilton has become the home of weekly Shabbat dinners, BBQ, a giant Sukkah, classes, lectures, the Ralph Travis Memorial Library and JLIC for Jewish McMaster students.

Kosher Food 

There are several options for kashrut observing students, and the number is growing every year.

The Piazza, Student Centre (McMaster University)
Kosher sandwiches from Hermes Bakery in Toronto are delivered every Tuesday and Friday to the Student Centre food court. Choose from egg, tuna salad or cream cheese and lox made fresh. For more information, see the Food Services.

Hamilton Kosher

HK is the butcher shop that serves the local Jewish community. There you can find fresh and frozen meats, as well as other staples of a Jewish kitchen like matzah meal, soup nuts, and jams. They also have a wide variety of prepared food items, when you don’t feel like cooking. The staff can tell you everything about where your meat is coming from. McMaster students get a 10% discount on all items.

Fortinos Westdale

Fortinos is one of the local supermarkets and the Main Street location has a large kosher section including fresh meat, cheeses, and frozen items.

They also have a fresh kosher sushi counter and daily made kosher donuts!

There is a shuttle bus that runs on Wednesdays from Mary Keyes Residence to Fortinos between 6 pm and 8 pm.

Second Cup Westdale

At the Second Cup in Westdale, all of the drinks are under the supervision of the Vaad Hakashrus of Hamilton. There are also often cookies and snacks that are kosher as well.

Hillel Bagel Lunch

Every Wednesday from 12:00-2:00 p.m, Hillel serves a FREE full kosher lunch of bagels, lox and cream cheese, fresh fruits and vegetables, hummous and dips, snacks and treats and much, much more.  Commons Building, Room B103
