Here at Queen’s Hillel, we are kicking off the semester with a bang. The excitement of a new school year is upon us, and almost as soon as students are back on campus, Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year will begin. It is quite fitting that all of these new beginnings coincide. Rosh Hashanah teaches us, over and over again, about a fresh start. It ushers in a time of the year that traditionally propels us to look inside ourselves and find the ways we can work towards being the best versions of ourselves. The rituals and traditions of this time provide structure to reflect on the past, dwell in introspection, and lay the groundwork towards improvements for the future. We are challenged to repair any damage that may have been caused to others, and ourselves, by our previous behaviours. Even the Hebrew word for year, “Shanah”, comes from the same root word as “Shinui”, the Hebrew word for change. As we begin the new school year, Jewish tradition provides us with an ancient framework for our modern lives, and guides us to realize the infinite possibilities for learning, growth, and improvement that lie ahead!
We are so excited for yet another year of opportunity. There are so many things to look forward to- new friends, sweet treats & yummy eats, learning, leadership, community service, social events, and more. As we delve into the semester, we can’t wait to see the incredible initiatives our students are passionate about come to life! As always, if you have an idea, cause, or expertise you want to share with others, Hillel is the place to make it happen. Keep your eyes on our website and Facebook page to stay on top of the incredible things we’re up to.
For all of us, and all of you- Leshanah Tova Tikatevu V’Tichatemu! May you be inscribed and sealed for a good year!
