More Than Just Snacks

Written by Ashira Prizant, Director at Queen’s Hillel

Looking back on this past semester, it’s hard to imagine how much has happened! It feels like just yesterday we were enjoying a delicious barbecue in the sun outside of the Hillel House!

Together with the incredible Jewish leaders on this campus (led by the tremendous team pictured here!!), Hillel has brought the Jewish campus community delicious Shabbat dinners, holiday programs (even a Sukkah on campus!), mental health workshops, educational Israel opportunities and speakers, an invaluable Holocaust Education Week, social events, and special programming for Frosh and Grads. There have been many bagels, latkas, meatballs, hotdogs, veggie dogs, tacos, challah buns, mini kugels, all dressed chips, cupcakes, cookies… did I mention we serve *great* (free!! Kosher!!) food?? But our Hillel is more than just the snacks. This semester has been about making new friends, and spending time with old ones. Finding a mentor for those new to campus. Exploring Jewish learning and finding out what it means to each unique student. Celebrating the holidays while away from home, and maybe even sharing those holidays with friends, classmates and housemates. Everyone has a place at Queen’s Hillel- your Jewish home away from home.

Here at Queen’s Hillel, we are inspired by the words of Rabbi Tarfon, who used to say:

לֹא עָלֶיךָ הַמְּלָאכָה לִגְמֹר, וְלֹא אַתָּה בֶן חוֹרִין לִבָּטֵל מִמֶּנָּה

It is not your responsibility to finish the work, but neither are you free to desist from it ( Pirkei Avot/Ethics of the Fathers, 16)

We are so lucky to be part of a campus with so many rich traditions. From the tams, to the leather jacket kicking, to the Oil Thigh, we are all Gaels through and through. The Jewish community here has a long history of vibrancy, richness, and strength. Our amazing student leaders are working hard to help bring relevant, meaningful programming and initiatives to campus that everyone would want to be a part of. To our incredible exec- thank you to each and every one of you for your hard work this semester! We can’t wait to work with you again soon!

Our professional staff team has grown this year as well, and we’re so excited and privileged to welcome Dor, our Israel Fellow, and Ilana, our Program Coordinator. The three of us are always here, and want to know what students are interested in, and how we can help bring that programming to campus. Whether its to grab a coffee and just chat, or create an initiative on campus, we are here to make that happen!  Together, we are all engaged in this “work” Rabbi Tarfon talked about-making sure there is a home on campus for every Jewish student and their friends.  Find us on Facebook here ( to see what we’re up to and to get in touch- we can’t wait to connect with you!

Thank you for an incredible semester. We hope you enjoy a well deserved break, and can’t wait to see you back on campus. Cha Gheill!!
