I can’t believe how quickly the year has gone by, but as they say, time flies when you’re having fun! And what a fun year it’s been! Our first semester was filled with so many amazing programs and events. We kicked off the year with a welcome back event in our newly renovated loft, where even President Mohamed Lachemi took a turn on our new swings! Our calendar then became filled with weekly lunches, clubs day, Café Ivrit led by the Shinshinim, and many other cool programs.
During Holocaust Education Week, in collaboration with the Ryerson Students Union and Ryerson University, we ran multiple events on campus. These included a photography exhibit in the SLC, a lunch dialogue program, and a survivor’s testimony speaker event. Bill Glied, a Holocaust survivor who sadly passed away in February, was an extraordinary guest speaker for Ryerson’s Holocaust Education Week. Over 150 people attended Bill’s testimony, and our exhibit in the SLC touched a countless number of students of all backgrounds. We take pride in the work that our students did in order to create this engaging and informative week on campus.
Our second semester was just as busy as our first! We started 2018 with Israel Week, a week jam packed with events, spearheaded by our awesome Israel Fellow, Or. During the week our Shinshin, Aaron taught us how to make hummus. We did an Israeli Food Festival tabling, an Ethiopian themed lunch led by one of the Hillel Ontario Israel Fellows, Ayinadis, and finished off the week with our Layla Lavan Israel party at the loft.
Throughout the rest of the semester, we had additional exciting events and programs including the annual Multifaith Shabbat Dinner in collaboration with the Ryerson President’s Office, and our first ever Shabbaton in Hamilton with McMaster Hillel. We also partnered with other Hillel Ontario campuses for our annual Purim Party and our huge Yom Ha’atzmaut party at the end of the year.
As our year comes to an end, we also say goodbye to our wonderful Israel Fellow, Or Weiss, and our two Shinshinim Aaron and Amit, as they all return to Israel. Thank you for all the hard work you did for Hillel Ryerson! And on behalf of the Hillel Ryerson team, we wish you all a wonderful, fun-filled summer!
