Last year, when I started working at the University of Toronto, I was surprised to hear that we did not host a Rosh Hashanah dinner on campus. The general rationale was that many of our students are from Toronto and there just would not be enough interest to justify a dinner. After learning more about our student body and their needs in the past year we found out many things, including that many of our students come from all over the globe and they DID need a place to celebrate the Jewish New Year. So, being responsive to student feedback, we decided we would try hosting a dinner on Erev Rosh Hashanah and we are so glad we did. Over 60 students from all over Canada, the United States, Israel, Europe and even Toronto came to the Wolfond Centre to ring in the new year as a community. Together we prayed, sang, laughed and ate a delicious kosher meal and truly started the new year off right! Students were coming up to us all night thanking us for hosting and they were so grateful that we had finally offered this opportunity. We too were grateful that so many students came and celebrated Rosh Hashanah with us, for many of them it was their first interaction with Hillel. We know it won’t be the last. It’s all part of our larger vision of building a strong, vibrant and active Jewish student community at the University of Toronto.
