The York strike continues to rage on, but that can’t stop us from reflecting on what a great year it has been! If you can remember the pre-strike days, then you remember a calendar filled with educational events, holiday parties, social justice initiatives and more. We had a blast at our tri-campus Chanukah party where York, Ryerson and University of Toronto students gathered together to light the candles and dance until the wee hours of the morning. We were privileged to welcome – via webcam – Rabbi Daniel Korobkin and Anat Hoffman to debate the current controversy surrounding the Kotel (Western Wall) in Jerusalem. We also had a great time visiting the Farmhouse Garden Animal Home and lending them a hand! This is just a small sampling of how active we were before the strike slowed things down.
We also wanted to take this opportunity to bid farewell to our Interim Director, Dan Hadad, and Israel Fellow, Lucy Kleinerman, as they move on to other opportunities. Dan brought a fresh perspective to our space and constantly found ways to push the envelope and to inspire the staff and students in so many ways.
Lucy’s dedication to both Israel and the Jewish people is truly inspiring. She always sought new ways to share her knowledge with York students as well as the entire Hillel organization, and made amazing connections while doing so.
Looking forward to next year, we are excited to welcome back our Director, Anna Kissin, and to see our On One Foot fundraising dollars at work as we begin to transform our lounge space this summer! We also plan to roll out new and innovative programming in the upcoming year in addition to bringing back the annual events that our students know and love.
Wishing you all an amazing summer and we’ll see you in September (pending the strike ends by then)!
